About AirAsia X

AirAsia X is the long-haul budget airline of the AirAsia group. AirAsia X flies to destinations which takes longer than 5 hours flight time from its main hub in Kuala Lumpur, mostly to airports in Australia, Japan and China. AirAsia X used to fly to London and India too, but this was cancelled early 2012 due to heavy losses on these routes.

AirAsia X uses double-aisle Airbus jets and has a bit more comfort than on normal AirAsia airplanes with for example more legroom. Inflight entertainment (movies and games) is not included but can be booked online or in the aircraft itself.

AirAsia X is owned partly by AirAsia, Aero Ventures, Virgin Group and several other investors.

AirAsia X is a small airline from Malaysia that flies to over 19 destinations. Most AirAsia X flights are for destinations in China but AirAsia X has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example Australia and Japan. From its main base in Kuala Lumpur 24 flights depart every week. Many people who look for AirAsia X tickets look for flights to Shanghai and Beijing.

Rules and information for AirAsia X

AirAsia X has a strict baggage policy in which checked baggage is not included in the ticket price and you are allowed to take 7kg in to the cabin for free (bag must not be bigger than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm). For any checked baggage you have to pay extra and the baggage cost can become a significant part of the final ticket price.

Cancellations, name changes and refunds

AirAsia X maintains a struct no-refund policy on all its flights and flight classes. There is one exception though, flights departing from South Korea: after the government intervened AirAsia now has a partial refund policy for flights departing from South Korea.

Changing an already booked ticket is allowed in certain circumstances. A change in route is not allowed as is any change to the flight within 48 hours of the departure. Changing the passenger name is allowed up to 6 hours before departure time. For all changes a fee has to be payed for the change to take effect.

AirAsia has fees for several services that are mostly free on other airlines, although it claims 'No Admin Fee', that's probably the only fee they have not included. AirAsia has currently these fees which will be added to the base ticket price:

  • Seating fee, charged for pre-selecting seats. Fees are higher for 'hot seats' near the front or exits.
  • Convenience fee. a strange name as it is simply a payment fee for paying with credit card.
  • Marked-up airport tax charges: airport taxes are increased a bit.
  • For long-haul flight there is a fee for in-flight entertainment including use of seat-back video.
  • Checked luggage fee. If you want to check-in a bag, you have to pay a fee depending on the weight of your bag
  • Fees for the use of a wheelchair
