The name of the airport is obtained from Sultan Syarif Qasim II which is a pre-independence historical figure from Riau. The Provincial Government of Riau is considering to move the airport into a new and convenient place, somewhere outside the city of Pekanbaru. Some locations have been taken into consideration, but there is no final decision yet.
