TANJUNG PINANG History
Tanjung Pinang used to be a part of Melayu Kingdom, but after Malaka was conquered by the Portuguese, Tanjung Pinang was then used as the central of Kesultanan Malaka government by Sultan Mahmud Syah. After Netherlands defeated King Haji Fisabilillah in Penyengat Island in 1784, this city was taken over by them. In Netherlands occupation time, this city was changed from Residentie Riouw into the central Hindia-Belanda (Indies-Netherlands) government. Then Tanjung Pinang was changed into district after the independence of Indonesia. And finally on June 21st 2001, this city was changed into a city until now.
Things to see
In Perigi Puteri you can see a bathing place used to be used by princesses in the time of Melayu Riau Kingdom. You can come to Kerkhoff Belanda Cemetery where many Dutches rested in peace there. This cemetery is the proof that there were some Dutches stayed and lived in Tanjung Pinang City. Visiting Penyengat Island, one main destinaton in Kepulauan Riau Province, to see its beautiful panorama is one interesting thing you might wanna do. You can also see the landmark of Penyengat Island, Masjid Raya Sultan Riau. This masjid is quite unique for using eggs to stick all the things instead of cement.
Things to do
If you want to snorkel or swim, you can come to Trikore and Lagoi Beach. Both those white sandy beaches, you will surely be welcomed by coconut trees waves. You can also try golfing in Ria Bintan Golf located in Bintan, 15 km to the northwest from Tanjung Pinang City.
Things to eat
One interesting typical food you can try in this city is Mie Lendir (mocous noodle). This noodle is made of boiled yellow noodle, bean sprout and egg mixed with nut thick-broth. Another one is Gonggong. Gonggong is a kind of sea-snail lived around Riau Islands. This Gonggong is then boiled and enjoyed by dipping it into condiment. This food tastes like boiled clams.
